Tin-tinnabuli

For Clarinet Quartet (with Tin Foil)

Composed 2020

Written for clarinet quartet, Tin-tinnabuli is an exploration in sounds. The clarinetists in this piece must cover the end of their instrument in aluminum foil. With this addition, at times the players sound more like snare drums than clarinets. The title, a pun on the style coined by the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt speaks to the repeating patterns that govern parts of the work and an overall stylistic influence on the work. The score requires the instrumentalists to coordinate as they wander through a slowly evolving sound world of buzzes and growls.
